Soldier Of Fortune III - Payback (portable)

You play as a high-priced mercenary working for "The Shop." There's the promise of a more engrossing story than in the previous two iterations of Soldier of Fortune, but really, who cares? You won't be playing Payback for the story. No, you're going to play Payback for the high death count and mind-boggling gore. This is not a game for the faint of heart. But, if you're a gamer playing FPS's, you're probably not faint of heart. If you get giddy just thinking about explosions sending body parts flying over your head, then Payback is probably perfect for you.

The controls are pretty much straight from Call of Duty, with one trigger (or mouse button) aiming down the sight and the other used for primary fire. As you'd expect, you have grenades to toss and the occasional weapon with an under-mounted grenade launcher as secondary fire. None of the actual set-up is new to the genre. So on the surface you may gander at Soldier of Fortune: Payback and think, "Eh, been there, done that." Then you start shooting people and suddenly the uniqueness of Payback shines through.

There doesn't seem to be a single body part that can't be separated from a body. The bullet from a SAW can tear off an enemy's leg at the kneecap. But he won't die instantly from this. He'll fall to the ground and either shoot at you in desperation or try to crawl to safety. If you leave him be, eventually he'll bleed out. But you can have fun and slowly dismember him with your weaponry. One time, just by chance, I shot a guy's hand off from 50 yards away. Unlike most shooters which switch to ragdoll once an enemy is dead, Payback uses ragdoll while an enemy is wounded (but still breathing). You can shoot a guy in the neck and he will hold his throat as it spurts blood. He'll stumble forward, bump into things, and generally look like a guy who was just shot in the neck.

Playing a few sections from a small sampling of levels proved that it takes a lot of bullets to kill an enemy. A headshot will, of course, cause instant death (or decapitation with the right gun and proper aim). Otherwise, unless you get some clean shots to the chest, you will often have an enemy that won't die easily. Good thing it's so much fun pumping extra bullets into bodies.

You'll have considerable options for your death spree. At the start of each mission, you can choose from a sizeable list of primary and secondary weapons, as well as a sidearm. There are more than 40 real-world weapons in the game. Many of these can be further modified with scopes, special ammo, and more. The weapons were carefully researched to create some semblance of realism amidst the almost cartoonish violence. Now, I should mention that the violence seen in the game is actually toned down from real-life examples the development team witnessed while doing research for this title. But in terms of videogame violence, it's pretty extreme.

This has already been patched with the v1.1 Vista patch so it should now work perfectly on Vista systems.
